Talbot Fold Barn Talbot Bridge, Bashall Eaves, Clitheroe

POA

"Just over 4 years ago this was a working barn full of cattle and hay," says Linda Clegg as she describes her home at Talbot Fold Barn.

"What was the dairy is now the kitchen but while the Aga and dresser unit still give it the homely, traditional air of a dairy, the rest is crisp and clean and completely modern."

When Linda and her husband Derek took on the task of converting the barn, its location alone provided further challenges.

"It's in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty so we couldn't alter anything from the original barn," Linda explains.

"Everything that was here has had to be reused but I like the idea of making everything look exactly like it was.

The best example is the huge floor-to-ceiling windows which run from our lounge through the master bedroom with double doors opening onto the elements and during winter you can see to the local landmark Pendle Hill - everything revolves around that because it's famous for the witches of Pendle!"

Restrictions may stifle the creativity of some but the Cleggs have truly weaved their magic by embracing the barn's simple, spacious layout. "The kitchen is clearly a statement piece but really there are only two rooms downstairs because the lounge and dining room share a central open fireplace which you can walk all the way round," the owner says. "It's certainly the hub of the room but the whole feel is open plan which makes it great for entertaining. We are very sociable people and have had up to 30 friends just milling about, but you could easily invite another 30 without feeling cramped."

The four bedrooms and three bathrooms upstairs have also been finished to a high standard with the Clegg's personal touches evident there too. "The bathrooms have marble basins which are beautiful but I also love the staircase which is French oak with big balustrades and actually came from our house in the Dordogne," admits Linda. "From the outside the barn has quite a French appearance with its honey coloured stone and washed out country look, I really like that style."

Set in an acre of land, the barn has a farm on one side and open fields to all others. The property also includes a one-bedroom cottage with plenty of potential for new owners. "That was the main house at one stage and apparently the family had nine children living there!" exclaims Linda. "Our son lived there which shows how it's ideal for someone who has teenage children that want independence or maybe elderly parents who don't want to be on their own. There's a big kitchen, a bathroom and a living room with a roaring open fire so again, it's very rural."

Named after the nearby Talbot Bridge, the property is ten minutes from the market town of Clitheroe which has all the main high street stores, schools and amenities a family could need,

while another short drive takes you to motorways. However, the Cleggs are moving to pastures even further a field. "It's too big for just my husband and I and we want to spend more time at the house we have in France," Linda concludes. "But it's a beautiful area of moorland with pheasants in the garden throughout the winter. Talbot Fold Barn is very much in the countryside."
